Lake of the Clouds Hut

Description

At 5,012 feet of elevation, the Lake of the Clouds Hut is the Appalachian Mountain Club’s highest and most visited shelter. Its history is tied closely to the early years of Mt. Washington’s growing appeal to recreationists – primarily, the dangers that climbing the mountain presents. In 1900, two hikers attempted to summit the mountain when violent weather quickly moved in, and both hikers perished. In response, the AMC voted to immediately construct a shelter, proving a vital life-saving measure over the years. Today, the Lake of the Clouds Hut is a rustic, full-service lodge that offers warm meals, fresh water, bunks and composting toilets. Accessed only by foot, hikers must plan appropriately for their visit and carry up all supplies for personal comfort (there is no heat or electricity). Reservations must be made and fees are paid through the AMC.
