Mount Surprise (via Carter Moriah Trail)

Surprise Mountain, accessed via the Carter Moriah Trail, offers hikers a rewarding adventure in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. This moderate to strenuous hike begins at the Carter Moriah Trailhead and winds through a lush forest before ascending to Surprise Mountain’s summit. Along the way, expect scenic viewpoints and diverse flora. The trail is approximately 4.4 miles round trip and includes steep sections, making sturdy footwear and preparation essential. From the summit, enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, adding a memorable highlight to your hiking experience in the region.

Trailhead Update: In 2025, the Carter Moriah Trailhead and its parking area will be relocated to increase parking capacity and reduce neighborhood impact. Stay tuned for more details!

There is a dirt pull-off parking area toward the end of Bangor St. about .1 mile before the Carter Moriah trailhead. Please note there is very limited parking at the trailhead, and parking is in a residential area, so please use designated spots only.
